A Message From the the Club President, Anne Dahlin Mahalo for the faith and trust you have extended in electing the club officers for 2010. As your new club president, there are a couple of themes I want to emphasize throughout the new year. q Increasing Members’ Participation. Our club exists for the preservation and promotion of Hawaiian culture and fellowship. We do all of this through our meetings and activities. Please mark your calendars and make attendance high in your priority. I would like to see a larger turnout of club members at our major activities, e.g., Laulau Meeting/Dinner, Hawaiian Festival, Wa’a race at Green Lake, Summer Picnic, Christmas party, and scheduled meetings. No one can make all of these, but I’m asking that you to make a 2010 resolution to increase your participation in club activities. You’ll not only help in preserving and promoting our culture, but you’ll enjoy the fellowship. We know this isn’t possible for those who are not well, so it’s left up to those who are still able to support club activities. q Trying/Re-Trying new things. We’ve learned that by listening to your suggestions or comments, there will be things that we can do or try to do differently to appeal to more people. I encourage you to tell club officers what things you like or dislike. If we know how you feel, we can look at what we’re doing and adjust accordingly. We are more than willing to try new things to make our club more interesting and fun. q Involving More Youth into the Club. A key part of “preserving our culture” means teaching and passing it along to the younger generation. We need to do this! I urge each member to encourage your family’s younger generation to join the club, or at least, participate in our culture-rich activities, i.e., helping at the Hawaiian festival, reading our newsletter culture stories (Na mea Kahiko Hawaii), or paddling with our wa’a group, etc. We all need to be persistent and patient in urging our children and grandchildren to make the time and learn about the Hawaiian culture and the life style we’ve all learned to love. I am honored to serve as your president this year and pledge to do my very best in coordinating the club’s activities and making this year a fun and enriching time for all. I’m looking forward to meeting many more members in the months ahead. Until then, aloha pumehana.
Anne Dahlin
